‘Social Stories’ application was developed by the speech therapists and senior child-care workers of Heep Hong Society. By describing social situations as understandable steps from the perspective of children, the application serves to help children with autism and other developmental problems acquire routines and interact with others in an appropriate manner through repeated reading of social stories. This application is also applicable to theme-based teaching at mainstream kindergartens.
The main features of ‘Social Stories’ include:
-Five common situations, namely visiting dentists, dining in Chinese restaurants, taking public transport, watching movies, and playing in the playgrounds
-Each of the five situations is comprised of social stories, sequence cards and picture cards
-There are mini-games in which children learn to put sequence cards in correct order
-Easy customization to suit individual needs: allowing users to create new picture cards, and re-arrange the presentation order of picture cards
*This application is applicable for iPad and works best under the guidance of parents or teachers.
